The night train
Last July, Maya and her brother Sam took the night train to Edinburgh. They did not fly. Their father said the journey was part of the holiday. Maya thought it was too long. Sam loved it.
At 11 p.m. the train left London. Maya read a book, but she was too excited to finish the chapter. Sam bought two sandwiches and a bottle of water. “They are cheaper at home,” Maya said. “They are part of the adventure,” Sam answered.
In the morning, the hills were green and the sky was pale. A woman asked them, “Where are you from?” “We are from Lyon, in France,” Maya said. “Is Edinburgh bigger than Lyon?” the woman asked. “I don’t think so,” said Sam, “but the castle looks older.”
They arrived at 7.40. It was colder than they expected. Maya sent a message to her father: “We are here. The trip was tiring but brilliant. Next year I want to go further north.” She did not say she had been a little scared in the tunnel.
D'après « The night train », maya’s message hides…
She did not say she had been scared.
